| British Basket-Hilted Swords Mazansky, Cyril (New) The phrase 'basket-type hilts' refers to a large group of hilts which provide a degree of protection to the hand and wrist. Basket-hilted swords have featured prominently among British military edged weapons over the past five centuries, from the Wars of the Roses in the mid fifteenth century to the period immediately after the second Anglo-Boer War of the early twentieth century. In setting out to give a full account of the hilt type, and the many variants within it, the first necessity has been to provide an appropriate terminology to employ in cataloguing and describing individual examples. The book falls into several parts, dealing successively with general aspects of various hilt types, discussion of typological methodology and analysis of hilt construction and decorations. The major groups of basket hilt types, covering the prototypes, early basket hilts and the wide variety of fully developed hilts, are described in detail. Additionally, the diverse group of incomplete basket hilts, the 'mortuary' hilts and those closely related to the 'mortuary' hilts, are described and given detailed typological classifications. Virtually all hilt types are accompanied with a photographic example. | | Price : $70 USD Shipping to America : $27 |

| Highland Swordsmanship Mark Rector (New) "After you take up your sword you are to lodge it on your left arm, then retire to an Outside guard with a graceful air...with a quick motion, both foot and hand, with your left hand down on the knee, showing your point in a direct line to your adversary's right eye, covering well your outside." The Scottish Highlander has been romanticized in poetry, song and legend; immortalized in the figures of Bonnie Prince Charlie and Rob Roy. His reputation as a fierce fighter and deadly swordsman was much more than a myth - a proud tradition of Scottish fencing masters taught the use of the backsword, smallsword, target and dirk from the 17th through the 19th centuries. These masters were as colourful and diverse as the Scottish people themselves, from the upper-class “Anglicized,” Sir William Hope, to the bawdy, soldier- turned-fencing master Donald McBane, who ran a fencing salon out of his wife’s brothel. In this omnibus edition, Mark Rector presents two classic manuals of Scottish swordsmanship from the days of Culloden. | RENAISSANCE SWORDSMANSHIP John Clements (New) Throughout the 16th century, a variety of new, single-handed civilian weapons were being developed, including the German Rappier, another cut-and-thrust weapon used for sportive fencing, as described in Joachim Meyer's Fechtbuch of 1570. 1570 is also the year in which the Italian swordmaster Signior Rocco Benetti first settled in England advocating the use of the rapier for thrusting as opposed to cutting or slashing when engaged in a duel. Nevertheless, the English word "rapier" generally refers to a primarily thrusting weapon, developed by the year 1600 as a result of the geometrical theories of such masters as Camillo Agrippa and Ridolfo Capoferro. The rapier became extremely fashionable throughout Europe with the wealthier classes, but was not without its detractors. Some people, such as George Silver, disapproved of its technical potential and the duelling use to which it was put. This is the most thorough work ever about historical swordsmanship. It is both a general reference and an instructional guide for advanced and beginning sword enthusiasts, students of military history and martial artists. Includes rare historical info and 100 original drawings. John Clements has practiced cut-and-thrust swordsmanship for almost 20 years and trains regularly in long-sword, sword and shield, sword and buckler, sword and dagger, medieval spear, and rapier and dagger methods. He lectures on historical weaponry and is an ardent promoter of contact-weapon sparring with historical replica swords. | SIGMUND RINGECK'S KNIGHTLY ART OF THE LONGSWORD Sigmund Ringeck (New) In the first half of the 15th century, fencing master Sigmund Ringeck compiled a book with comments based on the fencing lessons from Liechtenauer's verses first written down in c. 1389. Ringeck's original handwritten manuscript, which contains no illustrations, is of great importance due to its detailed instruction on longsword, wrestling, sword and buckler, armored combat and mounted combat. Ringeck's greatness is that he starts with the basics and then teaches the student the secrets of the longsword step-by-step. He offers clear and precise instructions in the actual handling of the sword and how to use it to win a fight. And herein lies Ringeck's claim to posterity: he gives instruction in the true understanding of the longsword as a weapon. Today, the longsword instruction found in Ringeck's manual has been given new life by two modern students of the arts. Author David Lindholm has translated Ringeck's text and added extensive interpretations and comments. Illustrator and sword aficionado Peter Svard has created hundreds of instructive drawings capturing every nuance of the medieval swordsman's art. Also included in this impressive volume is advice for modern practitioners, such as physical training, evaluation of historical resources and the importance of test cutting. Finally, master swordsmith Peter Johnsson shows how to sharpen a sword and describes how the shape of the blade dictates its function. | | Price : $44 USD Shipping to America : $9 |
